If you want to write blog posts, you need a blog to hold those posts. Google’s Blogger is a free, simple blogging platform that’s packed with useful tools. Here’s how to get started with creating a blog with Google Blogger.
If you have ever accessed a website that had “.blogspot” in the link, that means that you have been to a blog that makes use of Google Blogger. It is a very popular blogging platform. Since it is free you just need to have a Google account, which you’ve already got if you happen to have a Gmail address and you do not need to have any technical wizardry skills to set it up or publish your blog posts. It is by no means the only blogging platform, and It is not the only free option, but it is a very easy way to start your blogging career, not to forget, you can also earn from your blog.
Create Your Blog
To start, you will need to log into your Google account. For most people, this would mean signing into Gmail, but if you do not already have a Gmail account, you can create one.
Once you are logged into your account, tap on the nine-dot grid that is in the top right to open up the list of Google apps and then click the “Blogger” icon that is there.
On the page that comes up, click the “Create Your Blog” button.
Enter a display name that you would like people to see when they read your blog. This does not have to be your real name or even your email handle. You can change this later.
Once you have entered a name, click the “Continue to Blogger” button.
At this point, you are now ready to create your blog. Go ahead and click on the “Create New Blog” button.
The “Create a New Blog” panel would open up, this is where you need to choose a Title, Address, and also select a Theme for your blog.
The Title would be the name that is displayed on the blog, the Address is the URL that people would use to access your blog, and the theme is the layout and color scheme that would structure your blog. All of these can be changed or modified later, so it is not very important to get these perfect right away.
The Address of your blog must be [AnyFreeName].blogspot.com. When you start typing an address, a helpful dropdown would show you what the final address will look like. You can click on the suggestion to fill in the “.blogspot.com” part automatically.
If someone has already used the Address that you want, a message would be displayed letting you know that it is unavailable and you need to select something else.
Once you have chosen a Title, an available Address, and a Theme, simply click the “Create Blog!” button.
Google would ask if you want to search for a personalized domain name for your blog, but you do not need to do this at this point. Click “No Thanks” to proceed.
Congratulations, you have just created your Google Blogger blog! Now you are ready to write your first blog post. To do this, click on the “New Post” button.
This would open up the editing screen. There are lots of things that you can do here, but the basics are to enter a title and some text content.
Once you are done writing your post, click o the “Publish” button to make your post go live. This would make it available for anyone that is on the internet to locate and read.
You would now be taken back to the section marked as “Posts” in your blog. Click on the “View Blog” button that is below there to see your blog and your first post.
Viola! your first blog post is live and ready for the world to view.
It can take up to 24 hours for your blog and your new posts to appear in search engines, so do not worry if you Google your blog’s name and it does not come up in the search results right away. It would turn up soon enough! In the meantime, you can promote your blog on Twitter, Facebook, and any other social media channel that you like to get readers to your blog right away.
Change the Title, Address, or Theme of Your Blog
When you created your blog newly, you just gave it a Title, an Address, and a Theme. All these can all be changed. To modify the Title and Address, go to the “Settings” menu on your blog’s backend.
Right at the top of the page are the options to edit the Title and the Address.
You need to be careful when changing the address: Any links that you have previously shared would no longer work because the URL would have changed. But if you have not published much (or anything) yet, this would not be a problem.
To change the Theme of your blog, simply click the “Theme” option in the left sidebar.
You will have plenty of themes to select from, and once you have picked one, which would provide the general layout and color scheme, click “Customize” to change things up to your heart’s desire.
There are lots more to Blogger than just these basics, so dig into all the options if you want to. But if all you want is just a platform for you to write and publish your thoughts, the basics are pretty much all that you would need. Happy blogging! You can drop your comments if there s any help that you require.
